While most current XR experiences are solitary, the current pandemic has highlighted both the value of computers for human communication and the limits of current video based solutions. The social presence possible with XR technologies promises to deliver something more than video windows connecting people: the feeling of being with people even when it is impossible to meet in real life. This talk enumerates several important questions that need to be considered when designing successful social XR experiences and some of the important lessons that have been learned from games and existing social virtual worlds.
